Let’s Get the Right Fit (Without the Guessing)

Prefab fireplace doors are sized to your firebox opening — not the old door, not the screen, and not the “I’m pretty sure it’s about this big” estimate. If you know your fireplace model number, great. If you don’t, you’re still in good shape — clear measurement photos tell me what I need to see.

Quick photo tip: For most pictures, stand about 6 feet back, get level with the opening, and shoot straight on (no dramatic angles — your fireplace doesn’t need a glamour shot ✨).

Below you’ll see exactly which photos to take and how to frame them. The goal is simple: show the full opening clearly, plus a little of what surrounds it, so sizing is accurate.

  • Stay straight-on: Keep the camera centered (avoid tilting left/right).
  • Include the surround: Show at least 2 inches of tile/brick/stone around the opening.
  • Use good lighting: Turn on room lights so edges and tape marks are easy to read.

One important note: These doors are custom made from the measurements you provide, so accuracy matters. If you’re unsure at any point, send photos before ordering — I’d rather help you measure twice than have you live with a door that’s “almost” right.

How to Take Measurement Photos

If you know your prefab fireplace model number, great — this guide will help you measure so you can place your order with confidence. If you don’t know the model number (or it isn’t listed on the site), that’s completely fine. Clear measurement photos tell me everything I need to see.

Where to stand when taking firebox measurement photos

Firebox Opening

Get down level with the fireplace opening and take the photo straight on, not at an angle. You don’t need to be right up against the fireplace — standing back enough to clearly capture the entire opening works best.

Please make sure the photo shows at least 2 inches of the surrounding material (brick, tile, stone, or metal) on all sides. That extra context helps identify the firebox frame and ensures accurate sizing.

Measuring prefab fireplace width and height

Firebox Width & Height

With the tape measure fully visible from end to end, measure the inside opening at the front of the firebox. For width, measure black metal to black metal.

If there are raised screw heads just inside the opening, measure screw head to screw head instead. Make sure the numbers on the tape are easy to read in the photo.

For height, measure the inside opening from metal lip to metal lip. Some prefab fireplaces have tracks at the top and/or bottom — these tracks will be removed prior to installing prefab doors, so they should be removed before measuring.

Measuring top recess depth inside prefab fireplace

Recess Depth (Top)

Look up into the top track area — this is where doors would normally roll back and forth. Use your tape measure to show how deep that recessed area is.

If you see a strip of metal or any other obstruction, stop at the first obstruction and measure to that point. If there is no obstruction, measure back to the mesh curtain rod inside the firebox.

Measuring bottom recess depth of prefab fireplace

Recess Depth (Bottom)

If your fireplace has a bottom track, measure the depth of that track. If there is no track, measure the small flat area right at the front of the firebox.

If the bottom track can be removed, remove it first and then take the measurement as shown. Clear photos here help prevent installation surprises later — and nobody enjoys those.

If you’re ever unsure while measuring, pause and send photos before ordering. I’m always happy to take a look — it’s much easier to adjust measurements now than after a custom door is already in production. 🔥

Not sure about your measurements? That’s completely normal. If something doesn’t feel quite right, you can send your measurement photos before ordering and I’ll take a look.

Upload or send your photos through our Prefab Fireplace Doors page and I’ll help confirm the best fit before your door goes into production.
